For its 2024 National Awards, the Canadian College of Health Leaders is proud to announce that Interior Health (IH) was named recipient of the 2024 Energy and Environmental Stewardship Award for their unwavering commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility amidst daunting climate challenges. Throughout the turbulent summer of 2023, IH stood resilient in the face of extreme weather events, recognizing the profound link between environmental health and public well-being.

IH’s dedication to sustainability is evident through their impressive achievements in 2023, including maintaining carbon neutral operations for over a decade and pioneering the Climate Change and Sustainability Roadmap, setting a precedent in Canadian healthcare. By actively supporting communities in climate adaptation and implementing innovative technologies like anesthetic gas recovery, IH has significantly reduced greenhouse gas emissions and waste production.

This recognition underscores IH’s exemplary leadership and holistic approach to sustainability, with every level of the organization embracing and championing environmentally responsible practices.

The Award

This award recognizes a progressive healthcare organization that has implemented organizational wide initiatives demonstrating environmental responsibility through the reduction of energy usage, the preservation of natural resources and effective waste diversion solutions. Possible initiatives include the implementation of energy efficient building systems and solutions, comprehensive energy and environmental awareness programs, waste management initiatives, and green procurement practices.
